Gelert is a renowned outdoor brand that traces its roots back to 1975 in the small village of Beddgelert, located in the heart of Snowdonia, North Wales. Founded by Alastair and Jane Langdon, the brand was named after the legendary faithful hound of Prince Llywelyn the Great. Originally focused on providing value-for-money camping equipment to independent retailers, it grew into a major international name known for its tents, rucksacks, and sleeping bags.
While the brand's design and heritage remain deeply tied to the United Kingdom, production transitioned primarily to East Asia starting in the late 1990s. This shift allowed the brand to scale its manufacturing capabilities while maintaining affordable pricing for leisure campers and outdoor enthusiasts. In 1998, the company established a 'Far East' division specifically to manage quality control and ethical trading standards at its manufacturing sites.
In June 2013, following a period of financial restructuring, Gelert was acquired by Frasers Group (formerly known as Sports Direct International). This acquisition integrated Gelert into a massive portfolio of sports and lifestyle brands. Today, Gelert products are distributed globally, primarily through the Frasers Group retail network, leveraging the massive logistics and distribution infrastructure of its parent company while maintaining its identity as a specialist in heritage outdoor gear.
