Maizena is a globally recognized brand of cornstarch that dates back to the mid-19th century. The product was originally developed in the United States by the Duryea family, who founded the Glen Cove Starch Manufacturing Company in 1854. The brand became so successful that 'Maizena' became a generic term for cornstarch in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe and Latin America.
Over the decades, ownership of the brand transitioned through major corporate mergers, moving from CPC International to Bestfoods, and eventually being acquired in 2000. Today, the brand is owned by Unilever. While the brand has historical roots in the USA, it is now produced in various manufacturing facilities around the world to serve local markets, including sites in Europe and South America. In the Netherlands and Belgium, it remains a household staple used primarily as a thickening agent for sauces and soups.
