Droste Chocolate

Droste is a historic Dutch chocolate brand, founded in 1863 by Gerardus Johannes Droste in Haarlem. For over 160 years, it was celebrated as a staple of Dutch confectionery, famously known for its 'pastilles' and the artistic 'Droste effect'—a visual recursive loop featured on its cocoa tins since 1904.

Historically, the company operated as an independent business unit within various parent groups, including the Dutch group CSM and most recently the German confectionery company Hosta International. While production has been centered in Vaassen, Netherlands, since the late 1980s, the brand faced significant financial challenges in the early 2020s due to skyrocketing cocoa prices and energy costs. Although a 2024 acquisition attempt by the Belgian Belgian Chocolate Group (Pauwels Engineering) was initially announced, reports from early 2025 indicate the deal fell through, leaving the brand's long-term operational status under Hosta International uncertain as it works through bankruptcy or liquidation proceedings.
