Maker's Mark is a world-renowned American bourbon whiskey produced in Loretto, Kentucky. The brand's history dates back to 1953 when Bill Samuels Sr. purchased the Burks' Distillery and created a unique recipe using red winter wheat instead of rye to achieve a smoother, sweeter taste profile. One of the most iconic features of the brand is its hand-dipped red wax seal, a tradition started by Margie Samuels, who also designed the label and the brand name.
While the brand maintains its traditional production methods at its historic distillery in Kentucky, its ownership has evolved over the decades. Today, Maker's Mark is owned by Beam Suntory, a global spirits leader formed after the Japanese conglomerate Suntory Holdings acquired Beam Inc. in 2014. Despite the international ownership, production remains strictly centralized at the Maker’s Mark Distillery, which is a designated National Historic Landmark.
