The Commodore 64 Ultimate is an official modern tribute to the legendary 8-bit home computer. It is built around the Ultimate 64 FPGA mainboard developed by Gideon Zweijtzer of Gideon's Logic in the Netherlands. Unlike software emulators, this hardware implementation is cycle-accurate, providing a 'real' hardware experience with modern conveniences like HDMI output, Ethernet, and USB storage.

The brand Commodore, originally established by Jack Tramiel in the 1950s, became an icon of the 1980s personal computer revolution. After various changes in ownership and bankruptcies, the rights to use the Commodore name for this specific modern hardware were secured by Gideon's Logic through licensing agreements, bringing the classic brand back to the retro-computing enthusiast market.
