The product was originally created by Karl Graeffe in 1859 and has become a staple in Belgian households, particularly for topping pancakes and waffles.

The brand is part of the Tienen-Tirlemont family (known as Sucrerie de Tirlemont in French), which was originally established in the Belgian city of Tienen. Today, the brand is owned by Südzucker AG, a German-based multinational that is currently the largest sugar producer in the world. Despite the German ownership, the production remains deeply rooted in Belgium, utilizing local sugar beet crops and maintaining the historic factory presence in the region.
