Symbicort is a widely recognized brand of inhaled medication used primarily for the long-term management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains two active ingredients: budesonide (a corticosteroid) and formoterol (a long-acting bronchodilator). The Turbuhaler device is a breath-actuated dry powder inhaler that delivers the medication directly to the lungs without the need for propellants.
The brand was developed and brought to market by the Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca. The high-tech manufacturing of the Turbuhaler devices and the precision filling of the dry powder medication remains centered in Sweden, particularly at AstraZeneca's flagship respiratory manufacturing facility in Södertälje.
AstraZeneca, the ultimate owner, is a British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company. It was formed in 1999 through the merger of the Swedish Astra AB and the British Zeneca Group. Today, it remains one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, maintaining a massive global footprint while keeping its primary corporate headquarters in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
