Mercurial (Hg) is a distributed version control system (DVCS) designed to handle large software projects with high performance and scalability. It was originally created by Matt Mackall in 2005, released at a similar time to Git to address the needs of Linux kernel development. The name 'Hg' is the chemical symbol for mercury, referencing the speed and fluidic nature of the tool.
Unlike traditional commercial products, Mercurial is primarily an open-source project written in Python, with performance-critical parts implemented in C. Its development is decentralized, involving contributors from around the world. It gained significant popularity due to its ease of use compared to early versions of Git and was famously used by major technology platforms like Mozilla and Facebook for their core repositories.
From an ownership perspective, the project is governed as a community-led open-source initiative under the GNU General Public License (GPL) v2 or later. This means that while a core team of developers maintains the primary codebase, no single corporation owns the product. It is produced and maintained globally by developers participating in the Mercurial steering committee and broader community.
