The Swallow (known in Swedish as Svalan) is a historic brand of safety matches with a legacy dating back to the late 19th century. Originally produced at the Uddevalla Tändsticksfabrik (Uddevalla Match Factory) in Sweden, these matches became a global export success. Sweden was the pioneer of the 'safety match' technology, which replaced dangerous phosphorus with safer alternatives, making Swedish matches a gold standard for safety and reliability worldwide.
Over the decades, the Swedish match industry underwent significant consolidation. The Uddevalla factory was part of the empire built by Ivar Kreuger, which eventually evolved into the modern-day company Swedish Match AB. Today, while the brand maintains its iconic 'The Swallow' vintage artwork, the ownership has transitioned to Swedish Match, which continues to manage the production and distribution of these heritage match brands.
While industrial production of matches has shifted geographically, with many Swedish Match products being manufactured in Tidaholm, Sweden, or through international partners, 'The Swallow' remains a classic example of Swedish industrial design and safety innovation. The brand is currently under the ultimate ownership of Swedish Match AB, which was recently acquired by the global tobacco giant Philip Morris International.
