Philips, officially known as Koninklijke Philips N.V., is a globally recognized brand that began in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in 1891. Originally founded by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik, the company started by manufacturing carbon-filament lamps and quickly became one of the largest producers in Europe. Over the decades, it diversified into healthcare, domestic appliances, and personal care products.
In recent years, the brand has undergone significant structural changes. The lighting division, which includes the famous Philips Hue smart lighting system, was spun off into an independent company called Signify N.V. (formerly Philips Lighting) in 2016. While Signify continues to use the Philips brand name under a long-term licensing agreement, it is a separate corporate entity. Similarly, the domestic appliances division was sold to Hillhouse Investment in 2021 and now operates as Versuni.
Today, the core Philips company focuses primarily on health technology. Manufacturing is distributed worldwide, with major production facilities located in China, Europe, and the United States, depending on the specific product category. The brand remains a symbol of Dutch innovation, though its various product lines are now managed by different ultimate owners through complex licensing structures.
