Zeekraal (Samphire/Sea Asparagus)

Zeekraal, commonly known as Samphire or Sea Asparagus, is a salt-tolerant succulent that grows naturally in coastal areas and salt marshes. While it remains a wild-foraged specialty in many coastal regions, it is increasingly cultivated commercially to meet year-round demand in high-end culinary markets.

The production of Zeekraal is seasonal and highly dependent on climate. During the European summer, it is primarily harvested in the Netherlands (specifically Zeeland), France, and the United Kingdom. To ensure availability during the winter months, cultivation shifts to warmer climates such as Israel, Mexico, and Portugal. As it is a fresh agricultural product, it is typically sold under private labels or via specialized seafood and vegetable distributors rather than a single global corporate brand.
