Swizzels Drumstick Squashies are a modern soft, chewy gum adaptation of the classic hard-boiled Drumstick lolly. The brand's origin dates back to 1928, when Swedish-born Alfred and Maurice Matlow launched a confectionery business in London, eventually moving to Derbyshire during the Blitz. The 'Drumstick' itself was accidentally invented in 1957.
Today, the brand remains a staple of British confectionery, primarily manufactured at the Swizzels Matlow factory in New Mills, Derbyshire. The company remains a family-owned enterprise, with the third generation of the Matlow and Dee families overseeing operations. This makes it one of the largest independent confectionery manufacturers in the UK, maintaining its heritage and production local to the British Isles.
