Levi Strauss & Co. is a quintessential American brand that revolutionized the clothing industry with the invention of the blue jean. Founded in 1853 by Levi Strauss, a German-Jewish immigrant in San Francisco, the company originally served the needs of workers during the California Gold Rush. In partnership with tailor Jacob Davis, the brand patented the use of copper rivets to reinforce points of strain on cotton denim trousers in 1873, creating the world's first 'waist overalls.'
Historically synonymous with American manufacturing, the company shifted its production model in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. By 2004, Levi's had closed its last major U.S. manufacturing plants, moving most production to a global network of subcontractors. Today, their products are manufactured in multiple countries, including Vietnam, China, Mexico, and Pakistan, though specialized high-end collections occasionally feature U.S.-sourced production.
Ownership of the brand remained largely within the descendants of the founder's family for over a century. After a period of being private, Levi Strauss & Co. returned to the public market with an IPO in 2019. It remains headquartered in San Francisco, California, operating as a global apparel leader with brands including Levi's, Dockers, and Denizen.
