Fair Trade is a global certification system and social movement designed to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions. The brand represents a model of sustainable trade that prioritizes fair prices, safe working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the Global South. Products carrying this label range from coffee and cocoa to cotton and seafood.
The initiative originated from several independent non-profit organizations in the late 20th century, notably starting in the Netherlands with the Max Havelaar label. Over time, these organizations coalesced into international networks that set rigorous environmental and social standards. When a product is 'Fair Trade Certified,' it signifies that the supply chain has been audited to ensure workers are paid a premium for community development projects and that environmental protections are in place.
Ownership of the Fair Trade marks is typically held by non-profit federations rather than traditional corporations. The two most prominent global entities are Fairtrade International, based in Germany, and Fair Trade USA, based in the United States. These organizations do not manufacture the products themselves but license the logo to brands that meet their criteria. Manufacturing occurs in dozens of countries worldwide, wherever certified farms and factories are located.
