Salomon was established in 1947 by François Salomon and his family in Annecy, France. Initially a workshop producing saw blades and ski edges, the brand quickly revolutionized the skiing industry through innovative bindings and boots. Over the decades, it expanded into a global powerhouse for trail running, hiking, and alpine sports, becoming synonymous with high-performance outdoor equipment.
Today, Salomon's production is distributed globally. While high-end technical design and some specialized manufacturing still occur at the Annecy Design Center in France, the majority of mass-market footwear and apparel is produced in specialized factories across Asia, notably Vietnam and China. This allows the brand to maintain quality at scale for global distribution.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned through major sporting groups. After a period under Adidas (1997–2005), Salomon was acquired by Amer Sports, a Finnish multi-brand sports group. In 2019, Amer Sports was itself acquired by a consortium led by Anta Sports, a Chinese sporting goods giant. This ownership structure provides Salomon with significant resources for global expansion and R&D while maintaining its core French identity.
