Loudspeakers (luidsprekers) are electroacoustic transducers that convert an electrical audio signal into a corresponding sound. The history of the loudspeaker dates back to the late 19th century, with significant contributions from inventors like Johann Philipp Reis and Alexander Graham Bell. However, the moving-coil loudspeaker, which is the basis for most modern speakers, was patented in 1924 by Chester W. Rice and Edward W. Kellogg of General Electric.
Today, loudspeakers are manufactured globally, with a massive concentration of production in China, Vietnam, and Malaysia due to established electronics supply chains. High-end or audiophile-grade speakers are often produced in countries with a long heritage in audio engineering, such as the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, and the United States. Because 'Luidspreker' is a generic term rather than a specific brand, individual products are owned by various multinational technology firms ranging from Sony and Samsung (Harman) to specialized groups like Sound United.
