Unlike traditional welding setups that require compressed oxygen tanks, the Solidox system utilized a chemical burner to release oxygen from solid sodium chlorate pellets, making it a portable and popular hobbyist tool during the late 20th century.

The brand was originally developed and popularized by Turner, a division of the Cooper Tool Group. While the product has since been largely discontinued due to the rise of more efficient and safer portable oxygen tanks, it remains a notable part of American hardware history. Manufacturing and chemical production for the pellets were primarily based in Sycamore, Illinois, under the Turner/Cooper Tools industrial umbrella.

Today, the legacy of the brand is tied to the remains of the Cooper Tool Group, which merged with Danaher Corporation's tool division to form Apex Tool Group. Currently, the brand rights and historical liabilities are managed under the umbrella of Bain Capital and Apollo Global Management, who are the ultimate owners of the diversified industrial assets formerly held by Cooper.
