Founded in 1976 by Olivier Baussan, the brand began when he started distilling rosemary essential oil to sell in local markets. Most of the brand's production continues to take place in Manosque, France, through its manufacturing arm, Les Laboratoires M&L. This centralized manufacturing ensures strict quality control and adherence to European cosmetic standards. While the vast majority of its core skincare and fragrance lines are French-made, some accessories and localized items may be sourced through a global network of ethical suppliers.

Ownership of the brand has evolved into a global beauty powerhouse known as the L'Occitane Group.
