The American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is a large, iconic bird known for its vibrant pink plumage and stilt-like legs. Native to the shallow saline lagoons and estuaries of the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America, these birds obtain their color from a diet rich in carotenoid pigments found in crustaceans and algae. They are highly social creatures that live in large flocks, often numbering in the thousands, which provides protection against predators and enhances foraging efficiency.

From a life history perspective, flamingos reach sexual maturity between three and six years of age and are generally monogamous. They engage in complex, synchronized group displays to attract mates. Both parents participate in building a volcano-shaped mud nest where a single egg is incubated for roughly 27 to 31 days. Once hatched, the chicks are fed 'flamingo milk'—a nutrient-rich secretion from the parents' digestive tracts—until they develop the ability to filter-feed on their own. While not a manufactured product, their conservation status depends heavily on the preservation of their delicate coastal habitats.
