TomTom is a Dutch multinational company that revolutionized the way people navigate. Founded in 1991 in Amsterdam, the company originally operated under the name Palmtop Software, focusing on business applications for handheld devices. In 2001, it rebranded as TomTom and pivoted toward car satellite navigation software, eventually launching the iconic TomTom GO in 2004, which became one of the fastest-selling consumer electronics in history.

While TomTom was once a hardware-heavy company, it has successfully transitioned into a location technology specialist. Today, it primarily provides high-definition maps, real-time traffic data, and navigation software to major car manufacturers and tech giants. Its physical hardware, such as portable navigation devices (PNDs), has historically been manufactured through partners in Asia, particularly China, to ensure global distribution and cost-efficiency.

Ownership of TomTom remains significantly influenced by its original visionaries. As a publicly traded company on the Euronext Amsterdam, its founders—Harold Goddijn, Corinne Vigreux, Peter-Frans Pauwels, and Pieter Geelen—still hold a substantial collective stake of approximately 48%. This unique structure allows the company to maintain its independent status as a leading provider of location intelligence in an industry often dominated by large tech conglomerates.
