CUPRA was originally established in 1985 as SEAT Sport, the high-performance motorsport division of the Spanish automaker SEAT. Based in Martorell, Spain, the brand was rebranded as CUPRA (a portmanteau of Cup Racer) and launched as an independent high-performance brand in 2018. It aims to bridge the gap between mass-market vehicles and premium luxury brands, focusing on emotional design and electric performance.
Manufacturing of CUPRA vehicles is distributed across several European facilities within the Volkswagen Group network. Key models like the Formentor and Leon are produced in the Martorell plant in Spain. The fully electric CUPRA Born is manufactured in Zwickau, Germany, while the CUPRA Ateca is produced in Kvasiny, Czech Republic. The brand recently expanded its production footprint to include the Tavascan, which is manufactured in Anhui, China.
As a subsidiary of SEAT S.A., CUPRA is ultimately owned by the Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen AG), headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. The brand has become a primary driver of growth for SEAT S.A., increasingly focusing on a global expansion strategy and a transition to a fully electric lineup.
