Seabrook Crisps is a quintessentially British snack brand with a heritage dating back to 1945. The brand was founded in Bradford, West Yorkshire, by Charles Brook and his son Colin. The name 'Seabrook' famously originated from a clerical error when a photo processor incorrectly labeled Charles Brook's photos as 'Seabrook' instead of 'C. Brook.' The family embraced the name, first for a fish and chip shop and subsequently for their potato crisp business, eventually pioneering the first crinkle-cut crisps in the United Kingdom.
Manufacturing remains deeply rooted in its original locality. The company operates from its Princeville factory in Bradford, maintaining a strong 'Made in Yorkshire' identity while distributing products across the UK and internationally. Over the decades, Seabrook has been recognized for its commitment to quality, including being one of the first major crisp brands to use sunflower oil and becoming certified gluten-free.
In October 2018, the brand transitioned from local private ownership to international ownership when it was acquired by Calbee, Inc., a major Japanese snacking corporation. Despite this change in ultimate ownership, the brand continues to operate through its local subsidiary, Calbee Group UK Limited, ensuring that the production and character of the crisps remain local to Bradford.
