Kopke is the oldest Port wine house, founded in 1638 by Christiano Kopke and his son, Nicolau Kopke, who had come to Portugal from Hamburg. For centuries, the company remained in the hands of the Kopke family, building a reputation for high-quality wood-aged ports and colheitas. The production is centered in the Douro region of Portugal, where the grapes are grown and the wine is fortified and aged.
In the mid-20th century, the brand changed hands and was eventually acquired by the Sogevinus Group in 2006. Sogevinus is a major player in the Port wine industry, owning several historic houses. Today, Kopke remains a prestigious name in the wine world, still producing its famous ports in the Gaia cellars in Portugal under the ownership of the Sogevinus Fine Wines group.
