Merrydown is a prestigious heritage brand that began its journey in 1946 when Jack Ward and Ian Howie started fermenting apples in a garage at Merrydown Manor in East Sussex, England. The brand distinguished itself by using culinary and eating apples rather than traditional cider apples, creating a cleaner, more wine-like profile that became known as 'Vintage' cider. This unique approach remains a hallmark of the product today.

The production of Merrydown remains rooted in the United Kingdom, where it is crafted using a blend of apple varieties and a specialized yeast strain from the Champagne-Ardennes region. This fermentation process contributes to the brand’s refined, award-winning flavor profile that has made it a staple in the British cider market for decades.

Since 2011, Merrydown has been a part of the SHS Group portfolio after being acquired from the Merrydown PLC company. The SHS Group, a major player in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, manages several iconic beverage brands and ensures the continued distribution and production of Merrydown cider from its headquarters in Belfast.
