Freia Melkesjokolade is often described as a 'little piece of Norway.' It is one of the most iconic and best-selling chocolate brands in Norway, known for its distinct recipe that uses Norwegian milk. The brand was established in 1889 by Johan Throne Holst, who purchased the Freia chocolate factory in Oslo. Since then, the product has become a national symbol of Norwegian confectionery tradition.
While the brand is deeply rooted in Norwegian culture and continues to be manufactured at the historic factory in Rodeløkka, Oslo, its ownership has transitioned to international conglomerates over the decades. Today, Freia is a major brand under the umbrella of Mondelez International, which acquired the previous owner, Kraft Foods. Despite this international corporate structure, the production process for the classic milk chocolate bars remains centralized in Norway to maintain its unique flavor profile and heritage.
