Alpro is the leading European brand for plant-based food and drinks, best known for its soy-based milk alternatives. Founded in 1980 in Belgium, the brand was a pioneer in creating sustainable alternatives to dairy. The brand focuses on health and environmental sustainability, utilizing non-GMO soybeans primarily sourced from Europe and Canada.
Manufacturing takes place across several facilities in Europe, including major plants in Wevelgem (Belgium), Issenheim (France), and Kettering (United Kingdom). This localized production helps minimize the carbon footprint associated with transport.
Historically, Alpro changed hands several times. It was acquired by Dean Foods in 2009 and later became part of WhiteWave Foods. In 2017, the global food giant Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods, bringing Alpro under its ownership. Today, Alpro is a core part of Danone's plant-based division, reflecting the French multinational's commitment to diversifying its portfolio into vegan-friendly options.
