Founded in Amsterdam in 1991, the company originally focused on business-to-business software but pivoted to consumer navigation software for handheld computers. In 2004, it released the TomTom GO, which became an iconic portable navigation device. While the company still produces hardware, it has shifted its primary business model toward data, licensing, and cloud-based navigation services for the automotive industry.

Today, TomTom is recognized as a global leader in digital mapping and traffic information. Their products are used by millions of drivers, car manufacturers, and logistics companies worldwide. Although the brand remains headquartered in the Netherlands, its manufacturing and data centers are spread across multiple countries to support its global infrastructure. The brand remains an independent entity listed on the Euronext Amsterdam (TOM2).
