Matte Leão is Brazil's most iconic mate tea brand, with a history spanning over a century. It was founded in 1901 by Agostinho Ermelino de Leão Junior in Curitiba, Paraná. Initially starting as a producer of herb-processed mate, the brand became a cultural staple in Brazil, particularly known for its consumption on Rio de Janeiro's beaches.

In 2007, the brand underwent a significant transition when it was acquired by The Coca-Cola Company. Today, production remains primarily concentrated in Brazil to maintain the authenticity of the local yerba mate culture. It is managed as part of the Coca-Cola portfolio, benefiting from their global distribution network while remaining deeply rooted in Brazilian heritage and manufacturing.
