Milka is one of the most recognizable chocolate brands in Europe, famous for its distinct lilac packaging and the Simmental cow logo. The brand was originally created in Switzerland in 1901 by Philippe Suchard, who had established his first chocolate factory in Neuchâtel decades earlier. The name 'Milka' is a portmanteau of the German words for its primary ingredients: Milch (milk) and Kakao (cocoa).
Over the years, ownership has transitioned from the original Swiss company Suchard to Kraft Foods, and eventually to Mondelēz International following the 2012 spin-off of Kraft's snack food division. While the brand has Swiss heritage, the majority of its manufacturing now takes place in Lörrach, Germany, which is the brand's primary production hub for European markets. Today, Milka is a global brand under Mondelēz, maintaining its headquarters for European operations in the United States and Switzerland.
