Polestar is a Swedish premium electric vehicle brand that has transitioned from a motorsport team into a global automotive manufacturer. Originally founded as Flash Engineering in 1996 and later rebranded as Polestar Racing, the brand was acquired by Volvo Cars in 2015. In 2017, it was established as a standalone electric performance brand through a joint venture between Volvo and its parent company, Geely Holding Group.
In recent years, Polestar has adopted an 'asset-light' manufacturing strategy, utilizing the production infrastructure of its parent companies rather than owning dedicated factories. Manufacturing is primarily concentrated in China (Chengdu and Taizhou), but has expanded to include the United States (Ridgeville, South Carolina) and South Korea (Busan). As of 2026, the company continues to focus on shifting toward a fully climate-neutral production cycle while maintaining its engineering and design headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden.
