The MariaDB Optimizer is a core component of the MariaDB database management system, specifically designed to generate efficient query execution plans. One of its key features is the EXPLAIN FORMAT=JSON command, which provides developers with a comprehensive, machine-readable view of how the database engine intends to execute a specific SQL query. This output includes detailed costs, attached conditions, and optimization strategies that are not visible in traditional tabular formats.
MariaDB was born as a community-developed, commercially supported fork of the MySQL relational database. The project was initiated in 2009 by original MySQL developers due to concerns regarding the acquisition of MySQL by Oracle Corporation. Since then, MariaDB has evolved independently, introducing unique optimization features and performance enhancements that differentiate it from its predecessor. The development is overseen by a combination of the MariaDB Foundation, which ensures the project remains open-source, and MariaDB PLC, which provides commercial services and enterprise-grade features.
While the software is developed by a global community of contributors, its corporate headquarters and primary commercial leadership are based in the United States and Finland. As a digital software product, it is 'manufactured' or built on servers worldwide through collaborative coding efforts, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the open-source database ecosystem.
