Becel is a pioneer in the margarine industry, originally developed in the early 1960s by Unilever specifically as a heart-healthy alternative to butter. The brand name itself is derived from the acronym BCL (Blood Cholesterol Lowering), reflecting its medical origins. It was first launched in the Netherlands and has since become a leading global name in plant-based spreads.
While Unilever nurtured the brand for decades, Becel was part of the massive divestment of Unilever's spreads division in 2018. The brand is now owned by Upfield, a global leader in plant-based food production. Manufacturing occurs across multiple facilities globally to serve local markets, and today the brand emphasizes 100% plant-based, palm oil-free formulations rich in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
