Maza Hoemoes

Maza is a prominent Dutch brand specializing in Mediterranean delicacies, most notably its 'Hoemoes' (a localized spelling of hummus). The brand's journey is a story of cross-cultural fusion; it was deeply influenced by the Oberegger family. Hans Oberegger, originally from Austria, moved to the Netherlands and established a salad company called Hansel in 1976. Around the year 2000, the family acquired Maza, which was then a small hummus producer based in IJmuiden, and integrated it into their operations in Zaandam.

Today, Maza is a family-owned business headquartered in Zaandam, where all its products—including various flavors of hummus, falafel, and vegetable spreads—are manufactured. While the recipes draw inspiration from traditional Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, the production process and business roots are firmly Dutch. The brand has grown to become a market leader in the Netherlands and increasingly exports to other European countries like Germany and Denmark. In 2024, Maza further expanded by acquiring Florentin, a producer of organic Mediterranean products.
