Becel is a well-established brand originally founded in the Netherlands by Unilever in the 1960s. The name 'Becel' is derived from the acronym BCL (Blood Cholesterol Lowering), reflecting the brand's core mission: heart health. The ProActiv range was later Introduced to feature added plant sterols, which are clinically proven to lower cholesterol.

Historically part of Unilever’s food portfolio, the brand along with the entire spreads division was sold in late 2017 to KKR, a global investment firm. This led to the creation of Upfield, the current parent company. Today, Becel products are manufactured in several European countries, including Germany and Belgium, to serve different local markets. Upfield continues to focus on plant-based alternatives, positioning Becel as a leader in cholesterol management within the dairy alternatives segment.
