Black Velvet is a historic brand of Canadian whisky originally created in 1951 by Master Distiller Jack Napier. The brand was first developed under the Schenley Industries umbrella and was known for its exceptionally smooth flavor, leading to its name. The whisky is primarily distilled at the Black Velvet Distillery in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, utilizing local grains and Alpine water from the Rockies.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned several times through major global spirits companies. It was sold by Heublein to Canandaigua (now Constellation Brands) in 1999. In late 2019, Heaven Hill Brands completed a significant acquisition of Black Velvet from Constellation Brands, bringing the historic labels under their portfolio. Today, it remains one of the top-selling Canadian whiskies globally, with production centered in Alberta and bottling occurring in the United States.
