Polaroid, originally founded in the United States in 1937 by Edwin Land, is a legendary brand initially famous for its world-first polarized sunglasses and later for instant photography. Following a series of corporate restructurings in the 2000s, the brand's eyewear and camera divisions became distinct.
The Polaroid Eyewear division was acquired by the Italian Safilo Group in 2012. Today, Safilo manages the design, brand strategy, and production of Polaroid sunglasses and cases. While Safilo is a global company with roots in Italy, its mass-produced accessories like cases and certain eyewear frames are primarily manufactured in China to leverage global supply chains. The brand remains a household name, synonymous with optical innovation and polarized lens technology.
