Salomon was founded in 1947 in Annecy, France, by François Salomon and his family. Originally a workshop producing saw blades and ski edges, the company revolutionized the skiing industry with groundbreaking binding designs and later expanded into alpine and nordic boots. By the 1990s, Salomon had transitioned into a premier mountain sports brand, venturing into hiking and trail running footwear which today defines much of its global identity.

Over the decades, ownership of the brand has changed significantly. In 1997, it was acquired by Adidas. In 2005, Adidas sold Salomon to the Finnish group Amer Sports. In 2019, Amer Sports was itself acquired by a consortium led by the Chinese sportswear giant Anta Sports. While the brand maintains its design headquarters and global heritage in the French Alps, its manufacturing is distributed globally, with major production hubs in Vietnam, China, and Cambodia, alongside technical production in Europe.
