Bicycles, known in Dutch as 'fietsen', are a primary mode of transport with a heritage deeply rooted in Europe. While the modern safety bicycle was pioneered by inventors in France and the United Kingdom during the 19th century, the Netherlands has become the global epicenter of cycling culture and infrastructure.

Today, the manufacturing of bicycles occurs globally. While premium components often originate from specialized producers in Japan or Italy, mass assembly is frequently centered in Taiwan, China, and Eastern Europe. Ownership of the market is fragmented, ranging from historic Dutch brands like Gazelle and Batavus (now under large holding groups) to independent manufacturers and global conglomerates focused on sustainable mobility and micro-transportation.
