Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is a pioneering American semiconductor company that has fundamentally shaped the modern computing landscape. Founded in 1969 in Sunnyvale, California, the company initially focused on logic chips before evolving into a major competitor in the microprocessor and graphics markets. AMD is widely recognized for its Ryzen processors, Radeon graphics cards, and EPYC server solutions, which power everything from personal laptops and gaming consoles to the world's fastest supercomputers.
While headquartered in the United States, AMD operates using a 'fabless' manufacturing model. This means that while AMD designs the architecture of its chips, the actual physical fabrication is outsourced to specialized semiconductor foundries. The majority of their high-end chips are manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in Taiwan. Some legacy products or specific components have historically been produced at GlobalFoundries facilities in the United States and Germany. Assembly, testing, and packaging often take place in facilities across China, Malaysia, and Taiwan.
AMD is an independent, publicly-traded corporation (NASDAQ: AMD). It does not have a single 'parent' company, as it is owned by a diverse group of institutional and individual shareholders. Over the years, AMD has expanded its technological capabilities through strategic acquisitions, most notably the purchase of ATI Technologies in 2006 to enter the graphics market and the landmark acquisition of Xilinx in 2022, which solidified its position in adaptive and embedded computing. Today, AMD stands as a primary architect of the high-performance computing era.
