Flora is a prominent global brand known for its plant-based spreads and margarines. Originally launched by the British-Dutch conglomerate Unilever in the 1960s, it was developed as a heart-healthy alternative to butter, primarily using sunflower oil. The product in the image is Flora Gold, specifically highlighting its Omega 3 and 6 content and its palm oil-free formulation, marketed for the Central and Eastern European markets (as indicated by the Czech/Hungarian text).
In 2018, Unilever sold its global spreads business to KKR, a private equity firm, which formed the company Upfield. Today, Upfield is the world leader in plant-based nutrition and manages the Flora brand globally from its headquarters in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Manufacturing for the European market occurs across several facilities, including major plants in Poland and Germany, to serve regional demand.
Flora continues to evolve its brand identity toward sustainability and vegan-friendly ingredients. The transition from Unilever to Upfield marked a significant shift in focus toward purely plant-based technology, emphasizing cholesterol management and environmental benefits by removing palm oil from many of its core lines.
