Unix is a foundational computer operating system originally developed in the late 1960s at AT&T Bell Labs. It was created by a team including Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie and was designed to be a multi-tasking, multi-user system that provides a flexible and powerful environment for developers. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Unix evolved through several versions and branched into many different variations, including the famous BSD and System V lineages.

The commercial rights to the Unix name and original source code have passed through several hands over the decades. Today, the 'UNIX' trademark is owned by The Open Group, an industry consortium that manages the Single UNIX Specification. While the original AT&T source code lineage was sold to Novell and later involved in extensive litigation with The SCO Group, the brand represents a standard of computing that influenced almost all modern operating systems, including Linux, macOS, and Android. Most manufacturing of the physical servers running Unix and development of its core standards remain centered in the United States.
