Let's Encrypt is a free, automated, and open Certificate Authority (CA) that provides digital certificates for Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption. It was launched in late 2015 to promote a more secure and privacy-respecting Web by making it easy and free for website owners to provision HTTPS certificates.
The brand originated from a collaboration between researchers at the University of Michigan and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), along with support from Cisco and Mozilla. Unlike physical goods, the certificates are 'manufactured' digitally through automated software protocols hosted on server infrastructure primarily based in the United States. It is operated by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG), a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering open standards and security.
