Peijnenburg is the most iconic gingerbread brand in the Netherlands, with a history dating back to 1883 when Harry Peijnenburg opened a small bakery. The brand became famous for its traditional Dutch spiced cake, known as 'ontbijtkoek', which translates to breakfast cake. Over more than a century, the company grew from a local bakery to a national household name, emphasizing Dutch craftsmanship and traditional recipes involving a long aging process for the dough.
Today, the brand's production is primarily centered in the Netherlands, specifically at its facility in Sint-Hout. In 2006, Peijnenburg was acquired by the Belgian family-owned company Lotus Bakeries. This acquisition integrated the Dutch heritage of Peijnenburg into Lotus Bakeries' diverse international portfolio while maintaining the original brand identity. As of 2026, the brand remains under the stewardship of Lotus Bakeries, ensuring its continued presence as a market leader in the gingerbread category across the Benelux region.
