Morrisons, also known as Wm Morrison Supermarkets, is a staple of British retail history. Founded in 1899 by William Morrison, the brand began as a humble egg and butter stall in Bradford, England. Over the course of the 20th century, it evolved from a local market stall into one of the 'Big Four' supermarket chains in the United Kingdom, recognized for its strong focus on fresh produce and its unique 'Market Street' concept.
A significant portion of Morrisons' fresh food is manufactured and processed in-house. The company operates its own abattoirs, meat processing plants, and bakeries, making it one of the UK's largest food producers. While the vast majority of its private-label products are sourced and manufactured within the United Kingdom to support local agriculture, its global supply chain includes products sourced from various international locations depending on seasonality and availability.
In October 2021, Morrisons underwent a significant change in ownership when it was acquired by the American private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R). Despite this change in parent ownership to a US-based entity, the company remains headquartered in Bradford and continues to operate primarily within the British market, maintaining its legacy as a cornerstone of UK grocery retail.
