Band-Aid is a brand of adhesive bandages that has become a synonymous term for the product category itself. It was originally invented in 1920 by Earle Dickson, an employee of Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Dickson created the first bandage to help his wife, who frequently cut or burned herself while cooking, by combining a strip of surgical tape with a piece of gauze.
Band-Aid products are manufactured in multiple locations worldwide to meet global demand, with significant production facilities historically located in the United States, Brazil, and China. In 2023, the brand transitioned from Johnson & Johnson to a new standalone consumer health company.
As of 2023, Band-Aid is owned by Kenvue Inc., which was successfully spun off from Johnson & Johnson's consumer health division. Kenvue is now the world’s largest pure-play consumer health company by revenue, managing a portfolio of iconic brands like Tylenol, Neutrogena, and Listerine. The company is headquartered in Summit, New Jersey, and continues to operate as a publicly traded entity independent of its former parent company.
