Leica is a brand synonymous with world-class optics and precision measurement. The brand's lineage dates back to the mid-19th century in Germany, rooted in the work of Ernst Leitz and later the innovation of the first 35mm camera. Over the decades, the 'Leica' name became shared across three distinct entities following corporate restructuring: Leica Camera, Leica Microsystems, and Leica Geosystems.
Leica Geosystems, specifically, has its manufacturing soul in Heerbrugg, Switzerland, where it produces high-end surveying equipment, LIDAR scanners, and GPS solutions. While some manufacturing occurs in specialized facilities globally to serve international markets, the high-precision core and engineering leadership remain centered in Europe.
Today, the industrial and surveying division of Leica (Leica Geosystems) is owned by the Swedish technology powerhouse Hexagon AB. Under Hexagon’s ownership, the brand has transitioned from a hardware manufacturer into a leader in digital reality solutions, integrating cloud computing and autonomous technologies into their traditional hardware offerings to serve the global construction and geomatics industries.
