The Founding and Vision of Etnies

Etnies was founded in 1986 by French entrepreneur and designer Natas Kaupas and Pierre André Senizergues. Originally named "Etnics," derived from the word ethnic to reflect the subculture of skateboarding, the brand was later renamed Etnies due to legal issues. It has the distinction of being the first global skateboarder-owned-and-operated action sports footwear and apparel company. The brand pioneered the creation of the first pro model skate shoe, the Natas, which revolutionized how footwear was designed for the technical demands of skateboarding.

Global Design and Performance Heritage

Though born in France, Etnies quickly moved its operations to Lake Forest, California, establishing itself in the heart of the action sports industry. The brand is renowned for introducing technological innovations such as the STI Foam and collaborations with partners like Michelin to create high-durability rubber outsoles. In addition to its performance legacy, Etnies has established significant sustainability credentials, notably through its 'Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree' initiative which has resulted in the planting of millions of trees worldwide.

Ownership and Corporate Identity

Etnies is the primary brand under Sole Technology, Inc., a private company overseen by founder Pierre André Senizergues. Unlike many of its competitors who were acquired by large corporate conglomerates, Etnies has maintained its independence as a skater-owned entity. The brand continues to operate out of Southern California, managing its production through a global supply chain while maintaining its roots in the professional skateboarding community.
