The brand was originally created by the Edmund Münster company in Neuss, Germany, in the early 1930s. Known for its fruity flavors and distinctive texture, it stood out in the German market as a leading 'Kaugummibonbon' (chewy candy).

In 1986, the brand reached a turning point when it was acquired by Haribo, the world-famous gummy bear manufacturer founded by Hans Riegel. Since the acquisition, Haribo has expanded Maoam’s reach globally, integrating it into its vast distribution network while maintaining the brand's unique identity. Today, Maoam is produced in several European facilities, including large-scale production sites in Germany and the UK, and remains under the ultimate ownership of the Haribo Group.
