F-Droid is a community-maintained software repository for Android that serves as an alternative to the Google Play Store. It was originally created by Rudolf Mayer in 2010. Unlike proprietary app stores, F-Droid exclusively hosts Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), ensuring that users have access to applications that respect their privacy and freedom.
The development and maintenance of the F-Droid client and its server tools are managed by a global network of contributors. Because it is an open-source project rather than a commercial product, it is not 'manufactured' in a traditional sense; instead, its code is hosted, audited, and compiled by volunteers and the F-Droid Limited non-profit entity. Ownership remains decentralized as the project is governed by its community and operates under a non-profit structure to maintain its independence from corporate influence.
