Cara was founded by Singaporean photographer and artist Jingna Zhang as a direct response to the ethical challenges posed by generative AI. Launched in open beta during a period of significant artist migration from traditional platforms, Cara was built to provide a 'human-first' space. The platform distinguishes itself by prohibiting the hosting of AI-generated art and integrating Glaze technology to protect artists' work from being scraped by AI training models.
The platform is managed and developed by a dedicated team of volunteers led by Zhang, alongside key contributors like senior production engineer Katie Borisov and full-stack engineer Jake RT. Unlike many major social media platforms that have been acquired by large tech conglomerates, Cara remains an independent project focused on the creative community. Its development is largely supported through grassroots initiatives and the needs of independent artists seeking a professional environment free from the noise of algorithmic AI content.
As a digital software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, Cara does not have a physical manufacturing location. Its infrastructure is hosted via global cloud service providers to support its international user base of artists, recruiters, and fans. The brand is headquartered where its founder and core lead team operate, emphasizing its roots in the art community rather than the traditional corporate tech sector.
